Description
This is a rare coffee cup and saucer in ‘The Traveller’ or ‘One Legged Duck’ blue transfer printed, hand gilded pattern by John Turner & family, of Lane End, Longton, Staffordshire.
Both pieces are well decorated in a Chinoiserie blue printed pattern called The Traveller or One-Legged Duck, enhanced with gold hand gilding as per the images.
The cup and saucer are unmarked but a vase in the same pattern is illustrated on page 131 of The Dictionary of Blue and White printed Pottery, 1780 to 1880 by Coysh & Henrywood published by The Antique Collectors' Club.
The firm was started by John Turner (1738-87), who was one of the original partners in the New Hall factory. On John Turners death in 1787 he was succeeded by his sons, William and John, the firm closing in 1806.
